Men and Plastic Surgery

Men are increasingly investing in their appearance, with over 1.5 million male patients seeking plastic surgery, specifically minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. In 2022, more than 1.4 million male patients benefited from the shorter recovery time and more immediate results that minimally invasive surgery offers, resulting in a staggering 253 percent increase since 2019.

Top procedures included neuromodulator injections, commonly called “Brotox,” and dermal fillers, which increased by 65 percent and 70 percent in male patients respectively since 2019. Sclerotherapy, the most common treatment for improving the appearance of varicose and spider veins on the legs, saw a 54 percent increase in male patients since 2019.

In terms of cosmetic surgeries, male patients accounted for 88,876 of the 1.5 million procedures in 2022, a 4 percent decrease from 2019. The top 5 cosmetic surgeries for 2023

Liposuction

Liposuction holds the top spot for the second consecutive year. Liposuction sculpts the body by removing excess fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, back or neck, to improve contour and create a more dramatic appearance. Liposuction removes stubborn, unwanted fat that diet and exercise cannot eliminate.

Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, again in the Top 5. This procedure improves the size and shape of the breast using implants to correct small, uneven, or disproportionate breasts. Breast augmentation has been one of the most popular cosmetic procedures since 2006.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty continues to be a popular procedure, earning a spot in the Top 5 for the second year in a row. The abdominal area is tightened and reshaped with this surgery to improve waistline definition and give a slimmer appearance. Abdominoplasty can help correct loose or sagging skin, eliminate excess fat, and tighten abdominal muscles.

Breast lift

Breast lift surgery made a comeback in the Top 5 for the second consecutive time. This procedure repositions the breasts to reduce sagging, low volume, and inverted nipples. It does not change the size of the breasts, but it can help improve symmetry and create a more balanced appearance. It is often combined with other procedures such as a Mommy Makeover.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty returns to the Top 5 this year. Blepharoplasty removes excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper or lower eyelids (sometimes both) to reduce drooping or puffiness around the eyes, making them look youthful and rested.

The top 5 minimally invasive cosmetic procedures for 2023

Neuromodulatory injections

These injections, commonly known by their brand names Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin® and Jeuveau®, remain the most popular minimally invasive procedure. This procedure works by stopping the contraction of facial muscles, providing a temporary smoothing of facial wrinkles such as crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead lines caused by habitual facial movements.

Soft tissue fillers/HA fillers

Second in popularity are injectable hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm®, Teosyal®, Maili®, Restylane®, Belotero®, and others. They temporarily restore volume and smooth wrinkles and fine lines on the face without incisions. The results are immediate and the recovery time is short.

Skin rejuvenation

These procedures remove the top layer of skin in various ways to stimulate the growth of new, healthier, and younger-looking skin, giving patients a more radiant complexion. Methods include dermabrasion, chemical peels, lasers, and RF Microneedling. They improve the appearance and texture of the skin by tightening and revitalizing it.

Skin treatments

Skin treatments can help solve a variety of problems in a minimally invasive way. Combination laser treatments use different wavelengths to address multiple skin concerns at once, offering a comprehensive approach to skin rejuvenation. Laser treatments improve skin tone and texture by targeting pigmentation irregularities, redness, or sun damage.

Lip augmentation

This procedure is becoming increasingly popular, allowing patients a minimally invasive way to enhance the volume and shape of their lips with filler. The filler is injected by an experienced plastic surgeon to achieve a harmonious natural reshaping, resulting in temporarily fuller and more defined lip contours. The results are often immediate and the recovery period is short.

The top 5 Reconstructive Surgery procedures for 2023

Volume removal

Tumor removal maintains the top spot. This procedure removes abnormal tissue lesions and growths that can be cancerous, including skin cancer, or benign skin lesions. A skilled plastic surgeon removes the skin lesion while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue intact. Tumor removal not only addresses the patient’s immediate health concerns, but also leads to better long-term outcomes and an improved quality of life.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction remains second on the list in the Top 5. This procedure restores shape to the breast after mastectomy and has been shown to improve self-esteem and aid in positive body image following a diagnosis, treatments, or other medical conditions in breast cancer.

Scar revision

Scar revision drops one spot in the Top 5. Scars can affect a person physically, functionally, and psychologically. Plastic surgeons can minimize the visibility of scars and improve their texture, giving the skin a more natural appearance. Scar revision can also improve mobility and relieve discomfort, increasing the patient’s quality of life.

Genioplasty – Chinoplasty

Genioplasty – Chinoplasty remains fourth on the Top 5 list. This reconstructive procedure restores both form and function to one of the most visible features of the body – the face and jaw. It helps restore or improve basic functions such as speech, chewing, swallowing and breathing.

Hand Surgery

Hand surgery ranks fifth on the Top 5 list. This procedure is a specialized field of plastic surgery that treats and restores conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and forearm, such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and trigger finger.
