Our eyes are the mirror of the soul… they play a very important role in the aesthetics of the face, a central point of our personality, and their appearance clearly affects our overall image.

Eyelid surgery (scientific term blepharoplasty) is a procedure to remove excess skin, usually along with fat and muscle, from the upper and lower eyelids.

Blepharoplasty aims to correct sagging eyelid skin (blepharochalasis) and to correct protruding periorbital fat, commonly called “bags”, features that make us look more tired, while also affecting our vision.

The best candidates for blepharoplasty

The best candidates for blepharoplasty are men and women who are in good physical and mental health and have realistic expectations. Most are 30 years old or older, but if droopy eyelids and bags are a characteristic of you, you may decide to have the procedure at a younger age. Over the years, the skin of the eyelids relaxes (blepharoptosis), the muscles weaken, and fat appears around the eyes, causing “bags.”

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia and lasts 45 minutes. The blepharoplasty incision is made approximately   0.8 – 1 cm. above the eyelashes of the upper eyelid, in the natural crease of the upper eyelid.  This allows the removal of excess skin and fat.

The incision is closed with sutures which are removed after 5-7 days. The incision is perfectly hidden within the natural crease of the eyelid (orbital sulcus) and is barely noticeable once it has healed.

Lower blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty is performed with combined anesthesia, that is, with a combination of sedation and local anesthesia or with general anesthesia.

It concerns individuals with sagging of the lower eyelid and severe wrinkling of the skin, fat prolapse mainly in the middle and outer fatty compartment and exposure of the lower part of the eye socket (tear trough).

The lower blepharoplasty incision, depending on the indications, can be made inside the eyelid   in the conjunctiva (transconjuctival) or just below the eyelashes.

Excess skin that causes wrinkles is removed, excess fat, responsible for the “bags”, is removed or redistributed.

Combined operations

Blepharoplasty can be performed in combination with other facial surgeries, facelift or brow lift, xanthelasma removal. Xanthelasma are yellowish fat deposits that often accumulate under the skin of the eyelids. In some patients, they are associated with elevated cholesterol, in others, we do not know the cause.

Planning your surgery

Before you decide to undergo blepharoplasty surgery, consider carefully what your expectations are.

The visit to the clinic is very important. Your medical history, the options that are in line with your wishes, the details of the procedure and any complications will be thoroughly analyzed.

Blepharoplasty is not considered a painful procedure. In the first postoperative days,   mild swelling and bruising are observed, which gradually subside and disappear in 5-7 days. The aesthetic result becomes visible immediately and is complete after the second month.

Adverse effects or complications

Blepharoplasty is a routine procedure and is one of those procedures that achieve facial rejuvenation. Complications are rare and, combined with the doctor’s experience, are eliminated. However, there is always the possibility of complications such as inflammation and hematoma, which are treated by following the doctor’s instructions.

How long do the results last?

Blepharoplasty can boost your appearance and self-confidence, allowing you to enjoy a rested and youthful look for over ten years.
