Breast Reduction

Large breasts are often a desire of many women, but very large breasts (gigantomastia), disproportionate to the body type, create severe problems in daily life and lead a woman to undergo breast reduction surgery, either for aesthetic or functional reasons.

Gigantomastia puts a strain on the spine, limits the woman in daily and sports activities and reduces her sociability. Typical symptoms are dermatitis in the under-breast area, indentation and hunching of the shoulders from the bra due to the weight of the breasts with accompanying discomfort and pain in the neck and back with the simplest daily activities.

Breast reduction concerns women with oversized and sagging breasts. Gigantomastia in a woman appears from puberty and is due to both the growth of the mammary gland and the fat that surrounds it.

The result of any plastic surgery on the breast must, above all, be in complete harmony with the body that bears it.

Procedure

Breast Reduction is the procedure that aims to reduce the size of the breast according to the patient’s body type and this is achieved through incisions that are usually located around the nipple, vertically below it and often horizontally in the inframammary fold (JL or inverted T shape). The incisions are selected according to the size and degree of sagging of the breast, the elasticity of the skin, the preferences of the patient and the appropriate technique that will be selected by Dr. Maltzaris.

A portion of the mammary gland, fat, and excess skin is removed (which is sent for histological examination) in order to reshape the breast to its new size and position symmetrically bilaterally. The nipple is repositioned to a new higher position and often the diameter of the areola needs to be reduced to follow the new size of the breast.

Overall, the breast is reduced in size and lifted. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and patients usually leave the clinic the same day, following post-operative instructions at home.

Postoperatively, the patient wears a special sports bra for 1 month. The pain is mild and is treated with painkillers. The use of drains is usually not necessary. The sutures are absorbable and do not need to be removed.

Frequently asked questions

From what age is the patient a candidate for breast reduction?

The appropriate age for surgery is considered the end of adulthood, from the age of 18.

How long does the surgery take?

The surgery lasts from 2-3.5 hours for very large breasts.

When do I return to work and when do I exercise?

Usually the patient returns to work after 5-7 days depending on the demands of the job. Sports are allowed after one month.

Complications

Postoperative complications of breast reduction may occur, although they are rare, such as inflammation, hematoma formation, scar hypertrophy, nipple hypoesthesia, partial or total loss of the nipple due to impaired vascular circulation. It is also worth mentioning the possibility of minor asymmetry and the limitation of the ability to breastfeed.
