FUT technique

Strip Micro-Strip (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

The hair follicles are harvested through a surgical incision and a strip of hair is removed from the back and side of the head (high density occipital and temporal areas) and then, under magnification, the hair grafts are separated and transplanted into the recipient area.

FUE technique

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

With the FUE method, each hair follicle is taken individually and scattered with a special cylindrical cutting tool of small diameter, approximately 0.1 mm, from different areas of the scalp and is then transplanted into the recipient area.

The result of hair transplantation is evaluated in hair follicles and not in hairs as hair follicles can be single, double, triple or quadruple. The final number of hair follicles to be transferred is determined by the donor area (hair density) and the chosen transplantation method. Up to 3000 hair follicles, approximately 9000 hairs, can be transferred per session.

The new hair follicles take up residence in their new location within a few days and shed their hair, and within a few weeks the new hairs grow back normally.

Newly transplanted hair begins to grow in about 10 weeks. It is long enough to be groomed in about 6 months and, in most cases, will be fully grown in a year.

Advantages

The advantages of FUE hair transplantation over the older FUT or Strip technique are many and significant, contributing to the establishment of the former and the gradual displacement of the latter. FUE hair transplantation is superior to the FUT-Strip technique because:

Minimally invasive

• It is performed under local anesthesia and allows for an immediate return to daily activities.

Minimal to no bleeding

• It does not cause linear scars or marks in the area where the grafts were received (donor area).
• Minimal to no pain after the session.
• It does not require suturing of the wound at the donor site of the hair transplant, therefore the chances of infection, inflammation or wound breakdown are minimized.

Uniform result

• It allows for uniform use of the donor area, from where the grafts are taken.
• It allows for the precise calculation of the number of hairs to be collected, preserving the donor country’s reserves so that they can be reused in the event of a future session.

Safe

• It has little to no risk of complications (e.g., forehead swelling, folliculitis).
• It allows for re-implantation of hair in the future, if needed.
• It allows hair follicles to be taken from various areas of the body, such as the chest, back, beard, without causing any scars.
• It is ideal for both small areas (eyebrow) and large areas, without the creation of linear scars. In contrast, with the FUT method, an entire strip of skin is taken – with all that this entails for the patient (pain, scars, bleeding) – even for implantation in small areas.
